Hazardous substances are an integral part of modern society they can be extremely dangerous if not handled properly. If used incorrectly they can cause catastrophic accidents, such as fires, explosions, and serious harm to people who are exposed to them.
Aimed at reducing both immediate harm and long-term illness caused by the work-related use of hazardous substances the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations will come into force in December this year. If you are one of the 150,000 businesses across New Zealand that manufacture, use, handle and store hazardous substances in the workplace then this change will affect you and your business.
These requirements are currently set under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996. They will be transferred on 1 December 2017 to the Health and Safety at Work Act and a new set of Hazardous Substances Regulations will come into force.
